Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
